Auckland Tepid Baths

Tepid-bathsA recently completed landmark project in downtown Auckland is the iconic Tepid Baths and Gymnasium.  Designed by URS consultants and installed by Peter Illingworth Plumbers and his team, incorporating fusiotherm and Lilac for potable and non potable clear identification throughout the building.

The use of aquatherm products in aquatic centres is now becoming a first choice for architects and engineers for its durability and corrosion resistance in swimming pool environments.  We are also seeing the introduction now of under floor heating into changing room areas.

The Tepid baths were originally completed in 1914. There were two pools, one for men and one for women with an amazing 30,000 admissions with in the first six weeks of opening.

Back then the pools were filled with sea water used to cool the machinery at the Auckland Electric Tramways powerhouse. The heated water was then pumped to the Tepid Baths. Today the baths are gas heated to 27°C and are filled with fresh water.

In 2010, the Auckland City Council closed the facility and began the $15.8 million repair and redevelopment. The reopening in June 2012 has brought patrons back in their drove. The Tepid Baths reopened with the bigger, stunning 7 lane, 25m lap pool heated to 27°C. A smaller, 15m, and warmer (32°C) learner's pool with graduated depth is available for play and swim lessons from the smallest of babies (6 months) through to adults. Also onsite is a large spa pool heated to 39°C, a premium sauna and a steam room. The pool caters for all types of swimming from casual public access through the spectrum to elite squad swimming.
